Maternity Shoot - Carla

Carla Banson-Yulo is a preschool teacher and co-founder of Spark Discovery Center, as well as a blooming first-time mom-to-be. She and her husband Jovie are excitedly awaiting the arrival of their first baby this September. Although she was already in her 3rd trimester when we saw her, she moved around easily and effortlessly. Carla opened her mom's beautiful and art-filled home to us for this casual maternity shoot.

How has your pregnancy been so far?

"Luckily, my pregnancy has gone very smoothly so far. I’ve been able to continue working, traveling, and sticking to most of my pre-pregnancy routines. My doctor advised me not to hit the gym during my first trimester, but I’ve still been able to do yoga, a lot of stretching, and some swimming."

What pregnancy symptom are you experiencing that you didn't expect? Or expect to experience but haven't yet?

"I heard about it, but I didn’t think I would get it- back pain! It started around the 7th month and has been there ever since. I was waiting on crazy cravings and feelings of aversion towards my husband. Thankfully those never came."

What are you doing to prepare yourself for delivery and motherhood?

"Resting when I can. Reading up on childbirth, breastfeeding, and childcare. Enjoying the quiet moments."

What is the best piece of motherhood advice you've received?

"I’ve been told in many ways that I should not compare myself with other moms. Each pregnancy and motherhood story is unique, and it’s important to stay true to what works for you and your family. No pressure! Also, find a doctor you trust. You will receive tons of advise, hear all kinds of anecdotes, come across articles with opposing views- it’s good to have a reliable doctor-partner you can count on. Dr. Google does not count!"

What part of being a mom are you most excited about?

"I’m excited to see how parenthood changes my husband and me. As a couple, we love a good time and I look forward to seeing us grow into a new ‘us’ with baby now present. I just don’t know what to expect, and I like that!

I’m also excited about the opportunity to mold a human being and play a direct role in building her perceptions and beliefs- in other words, we now have someone we can brainwash into being a productive and empathic person, if she will let us (hehe)!"
